Metal Prong Challenge from Artisan Whimsy

Today is the day to reveal our metal prong masterpieces for the Metal Prong Challenge from Artisan Whimsy.

This was a new technique for me so I decided to go simple this time and make a pin. Now that I know how to do it, I will be making pendants. I really like the results.

I made this pin for my husband's boss, Sunnie, who is an attorney. Her friend gave her the sun rock and she wanted it made into a pin to wear on her black suit that she wears to court. She loves gold so I used textured brass and cut out some sun shine. I didn't want it pointed so I made it soft and mellow like she is in real life.

I still have more polishing to do but I didn't want to miss the post deadline. When I pickled the brass it got copper on it. If anyone has any suggestions besides using the flex shaft with various grinders let me know. I have been doing that and I also used Penny Bright.

Thanks for the challenge. It was lots of fun.

Stop by and see what everyone made.

  1. That is a beautiful pin and I know your husband's boss will love it. I am an attorney too and I loved wearing unusual and beautiful non-run of the mill jewelry to court. I don't go to court much any more as I am mostly retired, but I still love the jewelry. Great job.

  4. Julie - this is a gorgeous piece! What a perfect way to show off that stone. Love, love, love it!
I wish I had a quick solution to your brass/copper issue. I've not encountered that yet. Best of luck. It's still gorgeous regardless. :)

  5. I really like this pin, Julie. It was very thoughtful and creative, I know your husband's boss will love it. I don't have any suggestions for the copper, let us know what you do and what the results are! This was a great challenge!

  6. Thank you for the positive words. I really appreciate it. I love working with metal and the more I do it the more I want to do it. LOL

I will post a photo of how I solve my copper problem.

  7. Beautiful pin Julie!

To remove the copper from your brass you can use a warmed solution of pickle and hydrogen peroxide. I have one of those plug-in coffee warmer plates that is perfect for warming this solution in a glass or ceramic dish. Once you're done with the solution you can pour it back into your pickle pot (the hydrorogen peroxide will evaporate). It should only take a few minutes to remove the copper. Be sure to keep an eye on your piece because if you leave it in the solution for too long it may etch your metal. Hope this helps!

  8. Thank you so much! I will try it tomorrow and post a photo. I knew it had something to do with peroxide but couldn't remember the formula.

It is so nice to be part of a sharing community.

    1. One advantage of being a friend of Kirk's boss is that she thinks I can do anything.
One disadvantage of being a friend of her's is she thinks I can do anything.

Oh well, everyone needs some challenges in their life. It helps us grow.

Sunnie is the one that decided I could be her Wedding planner twelve years ago. I did it and it was huge. She also decided that I could be a Paralegal for a big case and I did it. She has lots of faith in me. She has made me realize that I can do anything if I want to do it.

      Sort of like you, Kumi.
